Gospel Mission and the Sovereignty of God

“It is worth pondering the point that our responsibility is actually a derivative of God’s sovereignty. If he were not totally sovereign, then it is difficult to see how he could give us total responsibility. Responsibility implies an authority before which and to which we are responsible. The idea of free will is that it is totally subjective and self-generating. Responsibility, by contrast, is a response to some objective and external authority.”

– Graeme Goldsworthy, Prayer and the Knowledge of God

Sermon text for this Sunday: Acts 18:1-17

Second Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:16-20

A Prayer for Today: “Almighty Father, who has given your only Son to die for our sins, and to rise again for our justification: Grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may alway serve you in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 1662 – The First Sunday after Easter)

Reflect:

“Ministry in Christ’s church must be governed by the wisdom of the Spirit, wisdom sought in prayer and soaked in Scripture, wisdom that seeks God’s glory, wisdom that rejoices in weakness.”

– Edmund Clowney, The Church

Music: “Crown Him With Many Crowns”
